Hello, welcome to the first edition of Developed, a space dedicated to the exploration of the products we develop, the origin stories behind them, and the historical influences that impacted their development.
I think that in today's landscape, starting a clothing brand has become more accessible than ever. With the growth of social media and the internet exposing people to different fashion trends, products and subcultures, we have seen an increasing number of creatives wanting to express themselves through creating their own brand. This rise of social media and the internet has also meant that for these creatives, the ability to connect with manufacturers and turn a passion into a physical product has never been greater.
While this accessibility has opened doors for creativity to flourish, I also feel it's important to acknowledge that this process needs to come with a certain level of intention and care.
With so many brands already and more continually popping up all over my Instagram and TikTok, I think it's really worth taking the time to look internally and ask a few simple questions. Why are we making this? What purpose does it serve? And most importantly, what are we bringing to something that has already existed for decades?
These questions essentially sparked the idea for this journal, blog, whatever you want to call it, to not only show my thought processes and exploration of the history behind the product but to hold myself accountable to why I feel this product needs to be made.
While our production and manufacturing methods might not meet the level of say, Story MFG, I still want to ensure I'm not bringing a product into the world that isn't to a certain standard. Whether that be in material selection, construction, fit or serves a new idea or purpose that maybe it didn't when it was originally produced.
Ultimately, AHMU MFG doesn't exist to reinvent the wheel. With an immense love for true vintage and the history behind garments and manufacturing, a large part of what I'm doing is exploring this curiosity: producing clothing that bridges a gap between vintage designs or styles that may not be accessible, or fit true to a certain shape or period. Bringing that into a modern setting, with updated fabrics and fit and making it a little more accessible to those who are interested.
So if this sounds like something you align with or are interested in, I invite you to come back each month as I explore the history, references and development processes behind the product we create here at AHMU MFG.
